Deutsche Bahn is giving up its network of self-operated coworking locations in railway stations

The German railways Deutsche Bahn is giving up its network of self-operated coworking locations in railway stations.
The office workstations at the main train stations in Berlin, Hanover and Mannheim as well as in the station surroundings in Düsseldorf, Erfurt, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich-East and Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe will be closed, says the Railway company.
The coworking locations were originally intended for commuters or business travelers who could have worked there during longer waiting times. The first location opened in 2020 at Berlin Central Station. The rooms were once a building block of Deutsche Bahn’s so-called “Smart City” project. The company understood this to mean adding additional usage concepts to its infrastructure and space.
“At least this part did not work out”, observes the Deutsche Bahn. “The coworking space was used too rarely. Annual operating losses in the six-figure range were incurred”, announced the railway company.”
Times are difficult for the German railways. In the first half of the year, Deutsche Bahn made a loss of € 1.2 Bio after interest and income taxes. Only 60.6% of long-distance trains reached their destination on time in August.
