FS Italian Railways to Integrate Coworking Into Stations Nationwide Under €100 Billion Urban Revitalization Plan

The Italian rail operator FS has earmarked €100 billion in its 2025–2029 Strategic Plan to revitalize infrastructure and urban hubs, including small-town stations, by introducing shared amenities like coworking spaces into historic sites.

One recent exemplar in Milan is the Porta Genova “Social Hub,” which converts a former station area into a cultural, recreational, and social centre featuring coworking zones alongside community events. This project demonstrates FS’s vision of repurposing railway infrastructure as centres of urban renewal and local engagement, says the company.

The plan includes over 1.200 active construction projects – half for routine maintenance, the rest for infrastructure enhancements such as high-speed rail links (Naples–Bari, Salerno–Reggio Calabria) and urban regeneration.

FS president Tommaso Tanzilli emphasized the strategy: “We are transforming stations in Italian towns under 15.000 residents into multifunctional hubs with pharmacies, clinics, and coworking spaces to combat depopulation.” This approach aims to integrate transport with local services and economic vitality.

By blending coworking and social services within station regeneration projects, FS wants to align mobility, heritage preservation, and community development into a unified strategy across urban and rural Italy.
