A ranking of the most “New Work” friendly seven biggest cities in Germany?

According to the real estate consultancy firm combine Consulting GmbH, if the digitization of a city’s economy is a big factor determining whether the offering will be high or not, it’s not the only one.

The company has elaborated a ranking of the “New Work readiness” (meaning being open to innovative office concepts and flexible workspaces) of the seven biggest cities in Germany. Aside the digital friendliness, the firm has taken into account in its analysis the size of the startup ecosystem as well as the number of coworking spaces operating in each city under review.
Without much surprise, Berlin, and its impressive startups magnet, comes number one in terms of “New Work” models acceptance.
Cologne comes second, Munich comes third and Hamburg fourth.
Clearly, cities dominated by more traditional industries, such as Stuttgart (automotive) or Frankfurt (banking, finance), are less “New Work” friendly than the previous mentioned ones.

“For a long time, Frankfurt’s banking district was considered a modern office hotspot. But that time seems to be over. Many of the large office towers date back to the 1980s and have only been adapted to modern work trends to a limited extent over time”, comments Hendrik Grempe, general manager of Combine.
Regarding Stuttgart, “many employers are gradually making their offices new-work-ready and are trying to improve the target group-specific user and brand experience. This is partly with the aim of being perceived positively in the war for talent and employer branding”, observes Hendrik Grempe.

According to Combine Consulting, the office buildings average ages and profiles in a city center can also technically influence, in a way or another, the possibility to develop more “New Work” complying workspace environments or not. “New work concepts can often be easily reflected in existing structures”, says Florian Schroeder, Head of Letting Services at combine Transaction Munich.
